My Uncle, a diehard Toyota truck fan suggested I start with a 1999-2004 Tacoma. What does Oppo think of that?

1st gens; great size, very capable, BoxRocket is my favourite;

Kinja'd!!!

The 95-98 3.4 5VZ had headgasket issues. Check the frames for rust as the replacement campaing is long over on first gens.. I’m not posting the pic but you’ve all seen the folded truck on the lift.

Start what?

I nearly bought a 2003 Xtracab 2WD 5-speed. I loved the lowness and drive of it. Had adequate power and could handle the odd-job while having space in the cab for bags behind the seat if I needed to.

Great trucks.

I can’t find good clean ones for fair money in NJ. I’m better off getting a Mazda B2300/2500 or Ranger (there’s a 3.0L V6 with 5-speed Ranger on eBay right now) and stocking the leftover $ from what the Toyota would have cost me in an account for if something breaks.

Most of the time with the small trucks, I find I can get a full-size for basically the same money.

I’m planning on buying a ‘16 TRD Offroad a bit later down the line, but I’m currently not in the situation to afford it, but I do need a new car.

Don’t buy used Tacomas. Seriously. They are way overpriced. Yes they can run forever but you can get more for your money if you buy something else.

Think about this for a minute, 175K miles for 9 grand and twelve years old. Just let that sink in for a moment.

Take this Ranger for example. Equipped about the same, 3 years newer, 80K miles less and only 1 grand more.

https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/684235903/overview/

This one is cheaper but still has 70K less miles than the Tacoma.

Tacomas have a love tax on them. Be sure you are willing to pay it, otherwise look elsewhere.

Great trucks, just be sure to examine the frame for rust.

It may cost more than a similar Ranger up front, but the slower depreciation rate over the next 5 years will even that out.

I very seriously cross-shopped these (double-cab examples because kids) against Volvo V70s and BMW 3-series wagons. The Toyotas were almost always more money for similar year, condition, and mileage compared to the others. I think my 325xi wagon is more fun to drive daily anyway.

On the other hand, these trucks are pretty fantastic.

These things seem like Jeeps in a sense that its not worth buying used. You can get a new one, and if you don’t like it, virtually sell it for what you paid.

It is fine is you don’t like Rangers, just be sure you like Tacomas enough to pay the love tax. That’s all I’m saying, be willing to pay the premium they command.

after owning a diesel f350 and a gasser f150 id choose diesel any day of the week

Buying a used Tacoma is pricey, but one of the benefits is you can turn around and sell it for what you bought it for. It’s obnoxious but there it is. It’s why I bought my truck new. I will happily pay an extra 10k not to have some one else drive my new truck 100,000 freaking miles before I get it.

Also, I’ve driven a few high mileage 4Runners/Tacomas. They’re great, for sure, but they still feel like old used cars. They aren’t magic.

I’ve owned a ‘94 B3000 since nearly new (2nd owner). It currently has 269,000 miles on it. The only big issue was the transmission which was rebuilt after an inspection plug failed at 130,000. Every other repair has been maintenance on wear items - brakes, tires, water pump (radiator done at the same time), distributor, clutch, etc.

The rear seat space in a Mazda is a bit more practical than the taco because the passengers sit sideways, making more room for their legs.

Your flip-flopping is bested only by my flip-flopping.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Buy your unreliable 6-speed A6 for your fun passenger vehicle
2. Buy an extended cab pickup that does pickup things, not passenger things.

Get one if it’s a 4 banger. My brother sold his with 500k on the clock and it still ran great. We still see it around town and he regrets getting rid of it.
